Buddy’s Story

I did time in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta for trafficking cocaine and other related offences. I knew if I didn’t change my life that I’d be in jail when my parents died. I couldn’t stand the idea of standing over their graves shackled and handcuffed. That thought seemed to wake me up or motivate me or something. I just knew I had to get some help.

After a 28 day treatment program in Fort McMurray I met Safe Harbour Elder Lynn Jonasson and that connection was the best thing that could have ever happened. It came just at the right time. I was so ready to hear what my Elder was teaching.

I started to learn everything I could about my Cree culture. I participated in all the gifts of ceremony. I helped at every event. Soon I found a job at Olymel and I stayed in Safe Harbour’s Supported Recovery Housing.

It’s been over 10 years. I am very grateful for all the support and care I’ve received along the way. I’ve saved enough money to have my own housing and I’ve reconnected to the community in a way I never knew was possible.

It’s possible for you too.
